… EXCESSIVE HEAT OUTLOOK FROM FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY…

AN UNUSUALLY STRONG HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BUILD OVER TEXAS THROUGH THE NEXT FEW DAYS THEN STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND WESTWARD TOWARD THE END OF THE WEEK. THE STRONG HIGH WILL THEN REMAIN ANCHORED OVER NEW MEXICO THROUGH THE WEEKEND. COMBINED WITH RELATIVELY DRY AIR IN THE LOWER LEVELS OF THE ATMOSPHERE THIS WILL LEAD TO EXCESSIVELY HOT TEMPERATURES BEGINNING FRIDAY AND LASTING THROUGH THE WEEKEND.

DAYTIME HIGHS OVER THE LOWER DESERT WILL RANGE FROM 109 TO 114 DEGREES ON SATURDAY… AND FROM 111 TO 116 DEGREES SUNDAY AND MONDAY.

AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES OF 112 TO 117 DEGREES WILL BE COMMON ACROSS THE LOWER DESERTS DURING THIS PERIOD. HEAT INDEX VALUES DURING THE PEAK OF THE APPROACHING HEAT WAVE WILL BE ABOVE 110 DEGREES IN THE MAJOR POPULATED DESERT AREAS OF PHOENIX… NOTE THAT THE HEAT INDEX IS A MEASURE OF HOW HOT THE AIR FEELS WHEN ACCOUNTING FOR HUMIDITY. EXACERBATING THE HEAT WAVE WILL BE OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES THAT REMAIN IN THE UPPER 80’s TO LOWER 90’s.

EXPOSURE TO TEMPERATURES THIS WARM CAN BE UNHEALTHY AND DANGEROUS TO YOUR WELL BEING EVEN DURING SHORT PERIODS OF TIME… ESPECIALLY IF STRENUOUS ACTIVITY IS INVOLVED. IF YOU PLAN ON BEING OUTDOORS ALWAYS REMEMBER TO REMAIN HYDRATED BY DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER NOT ONLY WHILE OUTSIDE BUT PRIOR TO BEING OUTDOORS. WHEN POSSIBLE CHECK ON THOSE THAT NEED ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE SUCH AS YOUNG CHILDREN AND THE ELDERLY. REMEMBER THAT PETS/ANIMALS CAN ALSO SUCCUMB TO THE HEAT.

Hey, Bob and I are some of those elderly!!!! When it was so hot 3 summers ago and he got literally ill from the heat (cool by AZ standards) is when we decided to have central a/c put into the house. Haven’t needed it for a few days with highs in the mid 60s and our first rain of the month, but the warm weather is returning. You, Honey and the cats stay cool.

Lea Ann, there is a blog for a guy who is purposely leaving the a/c turned off in his house this summer so he can write about it (I guess that’s his reason – plus the benefit of saving some money). He doesn’t even have a swamp cooler, which is how our family survived when I was a kid.
