May I put you on hold?

on May 18, 2010

Some people can’t stand waiting for other people; others do it calmly… perhaps, too calmly.

I’ve been waiting a lot lately. Sometimes we have to wait — a few minutes for a friend to arrive for lunch, hours for the cable guy/plumber/tow-truck to show up, days or weeks for a bank to approve a loan. Many times we have to wait on the phone, on hold, for what seems like forever …

After I posted the above, I ran across two related articles in the New York Times by Stanley Fish. In his “Opinionator” column, “Can I Put you on Hold? ” and its follow-up column with comments from enraged readers, Fish discusses his notion that “There is a class of utterances that, when encountered, produces irritation, distress and, in some cases, the desire to kill…” Great stuff – from Fish and from his readers!
